Sitting quietly on the banks of the Ping River, within a neighbourhood that has retained much of its traditional riverside character, this home draws on the layout principles of classical Chinese courtyard houses. Multiple buildings encircle a central courtyard, connected by covered walkways to create a private, secure compound for a three-generation family, while remaining open to the river.

At the heart of the courtyard, the main pavilion brings the family together for living, dining, and cooking, framing views of the Ping River and the Suthep-Pui mountain range beyond. At the northern end of the property, which is the coolest and most sheltered aspect of the site, sits the grandparents' pavilion in keeping with Lanna tradition and belief.  A semi-private southern pavilion gives the children space to study and the family a place to work.

The covered walkways echo the "tuen" of traditional Lanna homes, a semi-open shaded terrace for receiving guests and sharing everyday moments. A koi pond along the central axis draws the eye through the courtyard, animating the space and bringing calm to daily life.

Reclaimed timber from old traditional houses forms the primary material throughout. The columns and floorboards, in sizes no longer available today, are used across both the architecture and the furniture, designed to celebrate the natural character of the wood in full.

3-GEN House is a home that honours Lanna tradition, respects its riverside setting, and creates natural comfort in the tropical climate, in a form that feels contemporary yet deeply warm.
