Prince Mahidol Hall was designed as a world class, 2,000-seat
theater in Mahidol University’s Salaya campus. The hall space is acoustically
designed to provide the best natural acoustics for operas or symphony
orchestras, and built to host various other university
activities.
The structural element of roof lines’ repetitive pattern was inspired by the beauty of the human skeleton, alluding to the University’s origins as a School of Medicine, and the pitch form often found in traditional Thai architecture, which is also reflected in Mahidol University’s logo.
The roof design eliminates exterior noise through the
construction of two layers of envelope with an inner concrete shell. The long
span steel ribbing design maximizes the interior space where the skeleton of
the building is made visible from both the exterior and interior views.
The lobby and corridors are arranged along the exterior
glazed walls. Low-E glazing panels were chosen to allow natural daylight, creating a warm ambience and accentuating the inside space.
There is provision for stage equipment required to support different performances, with two elevators on main stage and orchestra pit.
Other architectural elements, such as minimum noise level air conditioning, the double layer shell, solid wall and sound reducing doors, were also important in ensuring the highest sound quality within the auditorium. A displacement air conditioning system, which distributes air to the seats from floor below, was therefore selected to efficiently ventilate the hall while minimizing the sound and wasted energy in such a capacious hall.
An epitome of both function and form, Prince Mahidol Hall has
become an emblematic structure and landmark of Mahidol University.
