Chulalongkorn Hospital - Thai Red Cross Society, generates a staggering 16 tons of waste per day that needs to be managed. This includes some 600 trash bins in circulation that need to be cleaned, aired out, and distributed to various areas of the hospital. Operations run 24/7. Since the existing waste management area is insufficient, a new building was allocated to provide additional space and designed for efficient waste management. This new facility includes areas for general waste, infectious waste, hazardous waste, and recyclables. It also provides office space, a rest area for staff, storage space for the various hospital units, and aims to be a model building for waste management that helps conserve the environment and save energy.
The design of the "Cheewanamai" (Bio-Sanitation) Building organizes waste management into distinct zones that allow staff easy and convenient access. The dimensions of each waste zone are designed to accommodate the tools and equipment used for that particular type of waste. The building's red, yellow, and blue color tones communicate the universal waste sorting colors, reducing the deep-seated negative feeling toward traditional waste facilities, while the ventilation system and odor management make the waste facility neighborhood friendly.
An area to showcase a model waste management system, allows the public to observe and learn all about comprehensive waste management. This transparent approach reveals the project's exemplary waste practices. In addition, exhaust heat from the office air conditioning condensing units is utilized to rapidly dry the numerous bins inside the building before distributing them to hospital areas, extending the plastic bins' lifespan compared to conventional outdoor drying with direct exposure to UV.
The building's environmental design incorporates green spaces and pleasant views for the building’s occupants and surrounding residences through vertical greenery shading, edible rooftop gardens with easy-to-maintain crops. A rooftop solar panel system and materials that comply with green building and environmental quality standards, further enable the hospital to pursue related green building certifications.
