THAILAND EXPORT MART

Rachadaphisek Road, Bangkok
Thailand
1999
In 1994 Architects 49 was selected through a design competition to design new exhibition building for the Department of Export Promotion (DEP). However, during the design development stage, the DEP decided to deviate from the original purpose and designate the new building as the Thailand Export Mart. It is used to assist exporters who want to display their products, as well as being a place to communicate with potential buyers from abroad. The architectural design aimed to match the high standard of other buildings in quality, despite it being a government building with a low budget. The design also needed to create a good working environment for trade negotiation. It was hoped that adhering to the highest standards and attention to detail would create a good impression and reflect on the quality of the manufacturers products. The building was planned to connect with a future subway station that is currently under construction. The basic building grid is derived from a modular system of construction material for efficiency in construction. The site constraint limited the building to be oriented toward the western sun. Attention to elements including the reduction in the number of openings and carefully designed aluminum louvers to protect from direct sunlight help save energy.
