MCOT OPERATIONAL BUILDING

Rama IX Road, Bangkok
Thailand
2001
The Mass Communication Organization of Thailand (MCOT) was in need of a new building to house offices and broadcast studios to accommodate future growth. The building was to be located on a newly available site, which connected to the existing campus from the back. The new building would provide a link between the existing entrance and access from a newly constructed road. To allow as much open exterior space as possible for future expansion, including the link between buildings, the design was developed as a mid-rise L-shaped building. Views and an attractive appearance were created by grouping similar functions together: new studios connected with existing studios simply via a skywalk passage, while the office occupies the other wing of the L shape. The structure of the new building was built as a box in a box from the foundations, pillars, and beams toward the roof, to ensure maximum sound isolation. A circular canopy was introduced to connect to the office and the broadcasting studio wing; the expression of the dynamic form reflects rapid communication and advanced technology while giving resonance to the existing fabric.
