“Laugh
Alive Pavilion” is an information center, meeting point, and a starting point
for Bangkok Design Week 2020 under the theme “Resilience: New Potential for
Living”. This pavilion reflects Thai people’s ability to adapt and their
remarkable resilience in the face of obstacles. A silver lining can be found in
any cloud through “humor and positive energy”. Positivity is the essence that
gets us through challenging crises. These innate qualities enable humans to
endure and survive in our environment.
The
design focuses on delivering and receiving information through various
activities and aims to connect information with laughter and joy. Creative collaboration
between the designer and various other fields based on zero-waste goals
generates joy for everyone.
“Generating happiness” Laughter is
universal, communicable and detectable, and is the main medium of information
exchange through interactive media developed by Bit.Studio. Balloons are used
to symbolize liveliness and serve to buoy up the shading canopy. The height of
the pavilion acts as a gauge of visitor’s happiness levels. As happiness is
generated within the pavilion, balloons are added, and the canopy floats
higher. Therefore, the shape of the pavilion is ever-changing due to the number
of balloons and the wind flow. The colorful canopy is composed of circular bags
fabricated by Moreloop from offcut garment fabric. Outdoor furniture is made
from repurposed rubber inner tubes covered by custom designed Moreloop
fabric.
“Spreading happiness” The canopy is
designed to be durable yet easily disassembled. Balloons are given out to
visitors at the end of each day, and on the final day the canopy is dismantled
on-site and cloth bags distributed to the visitors. The outdoor furniture was
also returned to be enjoyed at Bangsan beach.
After
the 9-day event, all that remains of the LAUGH ALIVE PAVILION are countless fun
memories, joy and laughter.
