Located in the campus’ residential “R” zone, the R3 building is an addition to the dormitory cluster. There are 70 units in this elevated 3-storey building which is structurally comparable with the existing R1 & R2 dorms. However, there is a distinct twist in the design of the interior and exterior functions.

The layout of each unit is mirrored and integrates a small pocket space, adjacent to the bay window balcony, which is partially exposed to natural light. This provides a “comfort corner” for each resident, which is also expressed on the exterior façade creating a spritely checkered pattern. The common areas of the building are designated as nodes for leisure, interaction and offers a communal environment for the residents.

Timber battens on the unit shafts and building façade, as well as semi-outdoor corridors, creates a flow of natural ventilation into the interiors, as if the building is inhaling the pristine air of the surrounding “Yaang” forest, enveloping its residents in a comfortable natural environment.
