To commemorate King Rama IX’s 84th birthday, the park was conceived under the philosophy of sustainable living expounded by His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

The project was intended to serve as a rest area for travelers, and a public park for the local communities. It is equipped with wind turbines and solar panels to help reduce energy consumption. Most of the trees and plants are existing species well suited to the climate.

At the core of the project is a cluster of buildings grouped around a central courtyard and enveloped by the landscape.

The highlight of the park is The King’s 84th Anniversary Memorial Hall. A relatively small floor space is set against a soaring ceiling which, together with large double doors on three sides, allows natural ventilation. The Memorial Hall is clad in vertical timber substitution fins, which reflect and meld with its surrounding. The fins have been strategically spaced to allow ever-shifting shadows to be visible while reducing heat gain to the building envelope.

The open-air kiosks selling local products are constructed from the same materials, while the two enclosed shops are lined with pivot doors that open to create a semi-outdoor space appropriate for its location in a park, as well as being a way of living sustainably in the tropical climate.
