Gateway Ekamai was situated next to the BTS station on a busy corner of Sukhumvit road, in front of Sukhumvit 42. To take advantage, the building had featured 2 ground floors, one on street levels and another on the BTS level. The exterior escalators and building entries were carefully positioned to divert the busy pedestrian traffic in the area onto the BTS station via the upper plaza. This upper plaza had added another public space that interact well with the station. On urban scale, the lower plaza helped enlarging the pedestrian pavement on the street level. The ribbon facade, weaving in and out, gave a strong character to the project. The curvy shape also fitted well into the angular land plot configuration. Using digital technology, each ribbon was named and drawn to precision. Another key element in the project, the skylight, was designed using a shell steel structure. The triangular grid structure was composed from a single steel member dimension. The steel members were pre-fabricated off-site, dismantled and transported to re-fabricate on site again.
