TOURISM TOWER, BANGKOK UNIVERSITY

As this building is provided for students of tourism and hotel management, which as an industry prioritizes practical experience, the primary goal was to create places where students could engage in a hands-on approach to their education. As a result, the building contains working hotel, spa, multipurpose hall and restaurant all run by students, as well as demonstration kitchen and life-size airplane interior mock-up. The last is perched high up on the uppermost story in a triple-height room enclosed by glass curtain wall so that the mock-up distinctive silhouette can be seen from outside. The stacked form of the tower represents the mixture of different functions contained within and was inspired by the idea of the sandwich and its multi-layering of different ingredients. As the university emphasizes creativity across all its programs, the irregular arrangement is also a way to make the building appear less formal and more playful. The hotel is placed in the middle of the tower and not too high up with the lobby on the second floor in order to take advantage of the surrounding greenery and especially the tall mature trees. For the same reasons above, the faades have been generously glazed to display the activities within, making the building feels open and dynamic, while the cladding material is rendered in a color similar to timber to blend in with its surrounding.
